Le Livre des Baltimore, Joël Dicker

Une deuxième lecture coup de cœur et du même auteur,  Le Livre des Baltimore de Joël Dicker.
Le récit nous plonge dans l’enfance de Marcus Goldman, écrivain à succès, également protagoniste principal du précédent roman de Joël Dicker, La Vérité sur l’Affaire Harry Quebert  (voir article précédent).

Marcus se remémore les souvenirs de son enfance, à l’époque où les Goldman formaient deux familles.  Les Goldman-de-Montclair, de classe plutôt moyenne habitant dans une petite maison à Montclair dans le New Jersey, d’où Marcus Goldman est issu, et la famille des Goldman-de-Baltimore. Cette famille riche et heureuse à qui tout réussit dans la banlieue aisée de Baltimore. Marcus, ébloui par l’idéal que représente cette famille, passe ses vacances avec ses cousins dans leur luxueuse maison.

Mais au fil des années, le Drame guette la famille des Goldman-de-Baltimore et cette image si parfaite que Marcus s’en était faite, se désagrège. Tout au long du récit, Marcus sera déterminé à découvrir la vraie raison de la chute des Goldman-de-Baltimore.

A travers ce roman, Joël Dicker nous plonge dans le monde des Goldman et il est alors impossible de décrocher.

The story takes us into Marcus Goldman’s childhood, a successful writer, also the main character of the previous novel from Joël Dicker, The Truth about the Harry Quebert Affair (find out more in the previous article).
Marcus recalls the memories of his childhood, back when the Goldman was two families: the Goldman of Montclair, from the middle class, living in a little house in Montclair, New Jersey, from where Marcus Goldman had grown, and the Goldman of Baltimore. This is a rich and happy family where everything seems to be working in the wealthy Baltimore suburb. Marcus, blinded by the idea represented by the family, spends his holidays with his cousins in their luxurious house. But over the years, a tragedy may lay ahead for the Goldman of Baltimore and this perfect picture of the family that Marcus had, is falling apart. All throughout the story, Marcus is determined to discover the truth about the downfall of the Goldman of Baltimore.
Through this novel, Joël Dicker takes us in the Goldman’s world, and it is impossible to break away from it.
